Wombles Premiere on TV
The Wombles were a very popular children's TV programme during the 1970s. They were small furry animal puppets that lived in burrows on Wimbledon Common and came out at night to clean up the rubbish left by people. Scottish Tartans Society records state that Wombles International, of Jacob's Well Mews, London, patented this design which is a variant of the Jacobite tartan.

Deep green shows a love for Scotland’s majestic highlands. Navy blue, and its clear central intersections, represents the forging of the clans within the DunBroch kingdom. And finally, the subtle grey imbues a sense of respect for the inner soul of the strong Scottish people.

The colours of the tartan are inspired by the colours of the various Blue Peter badges awarded to children in the UK for more than 50 years. In this way, the Blue Peter tartan reflects the heritage of the longest continuously running children's television series in the world.

Wombles were created by author Elisabeth Beresford, and originally appeared in a series of children's novels from 1968.[1] Although Wombles supposedly live in every country in the world, Beresford's stories are concerned with the lives of the inhabitants of the burrow on Wimbledon Common in London, England.

He is drawn wearing a red sweater and bright yellow checked trousers, with matching yellow scarf. Originally depicted as a brown bear, his colour soon changed to white to save on printing costs, though he remained brown on the covers of the annuals.
