Maine Dirigo

State Birthday
March 15, 1820

'Dirigo' (I lead) is the motto of the State of Maine. An adaptation of the original Maine Tartan (designed in 1964 by Sol Gilis of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia) developed by the Saint Andrews Society of Maine. The azure is for the State's skies, the royal blue for the lakes and seas; the green for the forests and farms and the red for the bloodline of the State's people. Note: the Original State of Main tartan, on which this tartan is based, is considered the oldest US tartan, designed in 1964 and said to be officially accredited to the State of Maine though this was never verified.
