Mystery Tartan Day

"There once was a tartan of grey,
With tones like the mist of the bay.
An enigma, they cried,
With options so wide—
"MacShadow? Or MacDreich, if you may!"

Do you have a mystery tartan in your life that you can't identify, that you would really like to know the name of? Perhaps you knew at one time but no longer can remember. This is a common problem. There are several ways you can try to recognize a tartan: there are colour order search methods, image matching, and of course, consulting with a weaving house is a good way to identify clan and traditional tartans. This tartan is one such that was found in a shawl in a store in 1976 and has made its way into the Scottish Register of Tartans. For those with a keen eye, it is non-reversing tartan and a modification of Buchanan. 🖤 🤍 ❤️ 🤎 🧡 ❓ 🕵️ 🔍

Identifying an unknown tartan can be difficult but there are some methods which may yield results.

Click the cartoon for some of the first things to try.

If all fails, contact a legitimate tartan weaver and see if they might be able to help identify your tartan.  Having a actual sample or a good photograph with true colours is a huge help.
