World Soil Day
"If I wanted to have a happy garden, I must ally myself with my soil; study and help it to the utmost, untiringly. Always, the soil must come first."
~ Marion Cran, If I Were Beginning Again
Gardeners and farmers take note! Here's are tartan for those who like to get their hands dirty! This tartan tribute is a tribute to an essential element of life, our soil! Designed to celebrate the British Society of Soil Science hosting the World Congress of Soil Science in Glasgow in 2022, the colourways of this tartan represents both the many constituents of a soil ecosystem, and also the different areas of specialization of soil scientists: microbiology, pedology, edaphology, physics, and chemistry. Interestingly, soil is not dirt! Dirt is an inorganic material made from broken-down rocks that primarily consists of minerals like iron, calcium and magnesium. Soil consists of dirt, water, air and organic material. It is the living layer between the atmosphere and bedrock. Soil is considered a living system and is teeming with life! One Tablespoon of healthy soil has more organisms in it than there are people on earth! But even so, only 1% of soil micro-organism species have been identified! Look kindly on earthworms and their soily brethren. 🌎 👨🌾 👩🌾 🪱 🐛 🐌 🐞 🍂 🌱 💧 🦠 🍄
