Rob Roy MacGregor
"Honor made him a man. Courage made him a hero. History made him a Legend."
~ Rob Roy (1995)
Rob Roy MacGregor became a legend in his own lifetime, thanks to the 1723 publication of The Highland Rogue, a fictionalized account of his adventures. Nearly a century later, Sir Walter Scott's Rob Roy (1817) further cemented his fame, adding new layers to his story. Inspired by Scott’s novel, composer Hector Berlioz wrote an overture bearing Rob Roy’s name, while poet William Wordsworth penned Rob Roy’s Grave during a visit to Scotland.
Rob Roy’s life and exploits have been adapted for the screen multiple times, including the 1922 silent film Rob Roy, Walt Disney Productions’ Rob Roy, the Highland Rogue (1953), and the 1995 film Rob Roy, which introduced a specially designed tartan in muted tones to sidestep controversy over the MacGregor tartan. Unlike Braveheart, the other Scottish epic released the same year, Rob Roy was filmed entirely in Scotland. Its sweeping opening shots capture the landscapes around Kinlochleven at the eastern end of Loch Leven, while Rob Roy’s cottage was built specifically for the film at Bracorina, on the northern shore of Loch Morar. Drummond Castle Gardens served as the grand home of the Marquis of Montrose, adding to the film’s rich historical atmosphere.

Premiering in April of 1995, Rob Roy was directed by Michael Caton-Jones with Liam Neeson in the title role. Neeson plays Rob Roy as an 18th-century Scottish clan chief who battles with an unscrupulous nobleman in the Scottish Highlands. Jessica Lange, John Hurt, Tim Roth, Eric Stoltz, Brian Cox, and Jason Flemyng also star.
Roth was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the treacherous aristrocrat Archibald Cunningham.
This tartan was designed and woven for the film Rob Roy by Gordon Covell of The Islay Woollen Mill.
