Pizza Day

“I’m making a pizza the size of the sun,
a pizza that’s sure to weigh more than a ton,
a pizza too massive to pick up and toss,
a pizza resplendent with oceans of sauce.

I’m topping my pizza with mountains of cheese,
with acres of peppers, pimentos, and peas,
with mushrooms, tomatoes, and sausage galore,
with every last olive they had at the store.”

~ A Pizza the Size of the Sun, Jack Prelutsky, 1996

Pizza with anchovies? Pizza with pineapple? Pizza with kilts? If you're in Glasgow and fancying a slice, there's a new pizza pairing in town! Domino Pizza has designed a tartan with corporate colours for their employees' new uniforms, kilts! Pizza, a staple of Italian cuisine, has become one of the most recognizable and popular dishes worldwide. A typical high-street now has a variety of international Italian and American-style pizza offerings, including homegrown chains PizzaExpress, Strada and Prezzo as well as Domino's, Pizza Hut, and Papa John's (alongside more authentic Italian-style and artisan pizzerias). And in some parts of Scotland you can get a deep-fried pizza from fish and chip shops! The original tartan, shown on the pizza delivery guy has been succeeded by this more sophisticated design, created to celebrate the opening of a Domino's Supply Chain Centre in Scotland. 🍕

The term pizza was first recorded in the 10th century in a Latin manuscript from the Southern Italian town of Gaeta in Lazio, on the border with Campania.  Modern pizza was invented in Naples, and the dish and its variants have since become one of the most popular foods in the world.

Deep-fried pizza is a dish consisting of a pizza that instead of being baked in an oven is deep-fried, resulting in a different flavor and nutritional profile. This technique is known in both Scotland and Italy, but there are numerous differences between the Scottish and Italian variants, which likely developed independently.  The Italian dish of pizza fritta (plural pizze fritte) originates in Napoli, and is usually made by frying a disk of pizza dough before applying toppings and serving. Alternatively, the fillings may be enclosed in a pocket of dough like a calzone, which is then fried; this is known as a panzerotto. Frying allows one to prepare a pizza without a pizza oven, for example from a street food cart where an oven is impractical.

This tartan was created for Domino’s Pizza Group which integrates its well-known brand colours. This tartan was used to mark the opening of a new store in Glasgow in 2017 and made available for team members who would like to wear a kilt.
