4Days Marches (Nijmegen)
"Walk of the World"
~ Four Day Marches slogan
Time for a long and tartaned stroll? Kilt up—the 108th International Four Days Marches (4Daagse) will be underway July 21–24, 2026! Held annually in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, this is the largest multi-day walking event in the world. Since its founding in 1909, it has celebrated endurance, friendship, and international camaraderie, welcoming tens of thousands of walkers from around the globe each year.
Participants trek through Nijmegen and its picturesque wooded surroundings, cheered on daily by enthusiastic spectators lining the route. After four days of walking, finishers make a triumphant entry along the famous Via Gladiola, where they're awarded the prestigious Four Days Medal—a fitting reward for an extraordinary achievement.
To celebrate this iconic event, a special tartan was designed: gold and green represent the medal's ribbon, red, white, and blue evoke the Dutch flag, and green and blue capture the lush landscape and sky. 💙 💚 💛 ❤️ 🤍 🇳🇱 👟🚶♂️👟🚶
This tartan commemorates the annual Four Days Marches that takes place in Nijmegen in the Netherlands.
Internationale Vierdaagse Afstandsmarsen Nijmegen is the largest multiple day marching event in the world. It is organised every year in Nijmegen, Netherlands in mid-July as a means of promoting sport and exercise. Participants walk 30, 40 or 50 kilometers daily depending on their age and gender, and, on completion, receive a royally approved medal (Vierdaagsekruis). The participants are mostly civilians, but there are also a few thousand military participants.
This annual walk that has taken place since 1909 with each day of the march named after the biggest town it goes through. Tuesday is the day of Elst, Wednesday the day of Wijchen, Thursday the day of Groesbeek and Friday the day of Cuijk. On Friday, as participants near the finish, the public awards the walkers with gladioli, a symbol of force and victory since Roman times, when gladiators were likewise showered with these flowers.
The tartan colours were selected to represent the event: gold and green for the ribbon of the Nijmegen-Marches Medal and red, white and blue for the Netherlands national flag; green and blue for the landscape and sky.
